Sugar Cane

Time for an educational interlude.

Mossman is in the heart of sugar cane country.  Harvesting started back in May, and according to the signs may run through to December.  It doesn't usually, but this is a bumper year.  Apparently by August they had processed more cane than in the entire season last year.

Although there are cane fields everywhere, down here and up on the table lands, there aren't so many sugar mills, and the one outside Mossman keeps very busy.  The cane is cut and put into huge bins.  There are tracks connecting all the fields, and the train comes round dropping off empties and pulling away the filled bins.  From the table lland the bins are brought down by lorry.  We saw a couple the other night - each lorry trailed 3 bins.
